Surrender
Late versus early surrender, correct timing, and the few hands where folding is the best play.
What surrender is
Surrender folds the hand immediately and returns half your wager. It exists for the situations where playing on loses more than half a wager on average — hard 16 against a ten is the classic case. Giving up half a bet feels like defeat, but on the worst hands it is measurably the cheapest option available.
Surrender is only offered as your first action on a hand, before any hit, double, or split, and many tables do not offer it at all. The default launch profile has no surrender; the late-surrender profile (6D · H17 · DAS · LS · 3:2) adds it without changing the rest of the table model.
Late versus early
Timing defines the two versions. Late surrender (LS) is elected after the dealer checks for blackjack — if the dealer has a natural, you lose the whole wager and never get the chance. Early surrender (ES) is elected before the check, so it works even against a dealer ace or ten that turns out to be a natural; it is far more valuable to the player and correspondingly rare.
The trainer’s surrender cells are all late-surrender cells. If you ever see early surrender offered, treat it as a different, more generous rule and expect a different chart.
The correct late-surrender cells
At 6D H17 with late surrender, the complete list is short. Hard 16 surrenders against 9, ten, and ace. Hard 15 surrenders against ten — and, because the dealer hits soft 17, against ace as well. Hard 17 surrenders against an ace. And 8,8 against an ace becomes “surrender; otherwise split.”
Everything else plays normally. Surrendering any hand not on this list gives up value — a correct surrender only trims a larger expected loss. Under this trainer’s six-deck S17 rules, surrender 16 against 9, ten, or ace and 15 against ten. The H17-only cells are 15 vs ace, 17 vs ace, and 8,8 vs ace.
