Basic strategy versus card counting

Two different skills

Basic strategy answers: given my hand, the dealer’s upcard, and these rules, what action has the highest expected value? It is total-dependent — it uses only the current hand state — and it is the same on every round, with no memory of cards already played.

Card counting answers a different question: given the cards removed from the shoe so far, has the mix of remaining cards shifted enough to change decisions or bet sizing? It modifies basic strategy with count-based deviations and, mainly, varies the wager with the count.

The boundary this trainer keeps

This site teaches rule-conditional, total-dependent basic strategy, full stop. The grader never uses prior-round cards, a running count, a true count, or penetration; insurance and even money are always declined because no count information exists; and the shoe may deal realistically across rounds, but the grading of each decision ignores that history deliberately.

The boundary is enforced in the architecture, not just in the copy: dealing and grading are separate modules, so the trainer cannot accidentally teach a count-based deviation while labeling it basic strategy.

Why the distinction matters

Basic strategy is the prerequisite for everything else — counting without a flawless chart is noise on top of errors — and it is also the honest ceiling of what it can do. Basic strategy reduces avoidable mistakes; by itself it does not make blackjack a positive-expectation game. A 3:2 table with favorable rules can still be a losing game over time even for a perfect player.

If you later study counting elsewhere, you will find this trainer’s charts are the correct foundation. What you will not find here is any implication that basic strategy alone beats the game.
